چکیده

The present study had its origin in certain experiments carried on in our laboratory to determine the possible influence of metals on bacterial growth. It was observed that members of the Escherichia-Aerobacter group when cultivated in an unbuffered glucose broth containing iron filings produced sufficient acid to dissolve some of the iron. The dissolved iron was detected by means of the potassium ferrocyanide test. Since more acid is produced by Escherichia coli than by Aerobacter aerogenes from the same quantity of glucose, it was thought that it should be possible to add to the medium sufficient buffer to neutralize the acid produced by Aerobacter aerogenes, while that produced by Escherichia coli, under the same conditions, would still be sufficient to dissolve the iron. The investigation of this hypothesis was the purpose of the study here reported. A preliminary report has been published in abstract form (Syrocki and Fuller, 1935).

Effects of Environmental Conditions on High-Yield Magnetosome Production by Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense MSR-1

Background:  Magnetotactic bacteria are a heterogeneous group of Gram-negative prokaryote cells that produce linear chains of magnetic particles called magnetosomes, intracellular organelles composed of magnetic iron particles. Many important applications have been defined for magnetic nanoparticles in biotechnology, such as cell separation applications and  acting as carriers of enzymes, antib...

Detection of Colicin genes by PCR in Escherichia coli isolated from cattle in Shiraz-Iran

A variety of probiotic bacteria have been tested to control animal and foodborne pathogenic bacteria in livestock. The mechanism of inhibition of pathogenic bacteria for several of those probiotic microorganisms is mediated by the production of bacteriocins. Colicins are probably the group of bacteriocins that have been most thoroughly characterized. Colicins are antimicrobial proteins produced...

Production and Crystallization Behavior of an Iron Rich Glass–Ceramic Prepared by Ironmaking and Steelmaking Wastes

Using wastes as starting raw materials is a common method to reduce the production costs and the environmental pollution problems arising from such wastes. In this study the production and crystallization behavior of an iron rich glass prepared by iron and steel making wastes has been investigated. The raw materials used, were the blast furnace slag, the blast furnace dust, converter slag and s...

Studies of Bacteria from Fermenting Egg White and the Production of Pure Culture Fermentations.

In a previous study (1942) an investigation was made of the bacterial and chemical changes taking place during the natural fermentation of egg white, a preliminary step in the commercial processes for preparing dried egg albumen. This study established rather conclusively that predominance of bacteria of either the Aerobacter or Escherichia genus is necessary from the standpoint of the producti...

Survival of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Listeria monocytogenes in Doogh, A Traditional Iranian Dairy Beverage

Background: Unlike industrially production, Iranian traditional doogh are not pasteurized after production. Hence, possible contamination with different pathogenic bacteria may occur during production or post-production of traditional doogh. The aim of the present study was to monitor the behavior of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Listeria monocytogenes in traditional Iranian doogh at different t...
